Shoreline Scramble at Vaja Bay

Rock steps and boulders below the trail line

The marked trail runs high above the water here, and this entry covers the short drop from that line down to the bay itself. It is not a separate route you set out to walk. It is the piece you meet on the way, over boulders and rough rock steps, and it is the part of the day where footing earns your attention.

Rocky shoreline with boulders and rough steps descending to clear water

Surface underfoot

A mix of boulders and rough rock steps. Most of it sits firm, but the slabs where people step most often are polished smooth, and that is where a boot slides instead of gripping.

Shade and wind

No shade on the descent. The bay takes wind straight off the open sea, so the lower rocks can feel cooler and more exposed than the trail above, even on a still afternoon.

Getting in and out

Entry is from the trail above. The point is clear once you are standing at it, but it is not marked, so it is easy to walk past if you are moving at pace.

Reading the descent

The scramble is short, and that is exactly why it deserves a slower pace. A wrong step here matters more than anywhere else on the route, because the rock drops toward the water rather than onto flat ground. Take the polished sections one at a time, keep your weight over the boulders, and treat the wind as part of the decision rather than background noise.

For the wider set of entries this one sits inside, the trail index is on the projects page. If you want to compare how the coastal routes are put together before you plan a day out, the solutions overview lays out the different route types side by side.
